"Frosted Gold" New painting of the Diablo Foothills
Frosted Gold 12 x 16
Painted this winter in the foothills of Mount Diablo. It's been disorienting this winter to paint the golden hills of summer. The gold is paler with undertones of lavender and taupe. I like the composition of these ridges with the diagonal oaks balanced by the lavender slice of Blackhawk Ridge.
This is in keeping with the quieter mood of the oak tree series I started last fall.
I want to share a tool I use to decide if a painting is done. Which means are all the values consistent and do they make sense? Sometimes a patch of beautiful color will be just plain wrong in value and converting the painting to black and white helps me know if a change is needed. Here is the B and W version of "Frosted Gold."
In this case , I was wondering if the front ridge was too dark a value , but looking at the grays, I was satisfied with the value shift.
This painting is available at the Fairmont Gallery in Sonoma.
