California Art Club 113th Gold Medal Exhibition

“Spring Radiance”

So honored and excited to receive this letter.

We are delighted to inform you that your superb work, referenced above, has been selected for the California Art Club’s 113th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition at the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University in Orange from Tuesday, August 20, 2024 – Sunday, October 26, 2024. Congratulations! Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University California Art Club, est. 1909 “

Artist Statement

This painting is about the vivid colors one can see on a sunny day in the Spring in Southern California. The early California landscape painters were mocked by East Coast critics for their use of bright colors. I take pleasure in pushing the brilliance of watercolors to the edge of gaudiness( and hopefully not all the way there) to express this glowing place.

Monumental Miniatures 2022. California Art Club Exhibition

“ Rising” Plein air watercolor will be on exhibit at the California Art Club Gallery at the Old Mill from September 29 to January 22 2023.

One of just 54 highly curated images I am pleased to have this painting of Font’s Point in the exhibit. A lesser known part of California history, Font’s Point was on the route discovering a link from the Spanish settlements in Arizona to the ones in California.

“Rising “ was an afternoon painting where I felt heat rising off the land . It was painted during the Borrego Springs Plein Air Invitational.

110th Gold Medal Exhibition /California Art Club

Springtime At the Lagoon 14 x 21
The coast of Southern California has a special quality to the fog-filtered light. Tiny water droplets in the air reflect the light of the sun, creating colors that are pale but brilliant. This is the light I was seeking to capture in "Springtime at the Lagoon"

Since its 1909 inauguration, the California Art Club has been dedicated to promoting and supporting contemporary-traditional fine art through championing painting and sculpture featuring representational practices. The Annual Gold Medal Exhibition is the most vital platform for demonstrating the best of the realist genre. While participating artists employ time-honored fine art techniques, their featured works in this un-themed exhibition seek to innovate with modern messages that address societal issues from diversity to the environment.

In presenting the 110th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition with the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University, the California Art Club embarked on an exciting new partnership with this relatively new cultural institution. While our initial plans were to unveil our signature event in Orange County for the very first time, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we presented this much anticipated display on our website with a full slate of online activities and educational programs.

Mars an Artistic Mission

Flyover Canyons of Mars 24 X 18 watercolor.

The California Art Club exhibit is part of the celebration of Perseverance landing on Mars .

This was inspired by the fact skies on Mars are gold because of all the dust in the air. This makes lovely hazy atmospheric conditions that are perfect for soft washes of watercolor.

L A Arboretum exhibit with the California Art Club "Captured on Canvas"

This is what the sapphire tower really looks like. It's a bizarre succulent from the mountains of Peru and during last year's super bloom it put on a spectacular show. It looks alien with a palette of colors not seen very often in nature.

"Sapphire Tower" 20 x 16 is on exhibit now to January 16, 2020 in "Captured on Canvas" at the Arboretum Library with an opening reception on November 2 from 2 to 4 pm. A California Art Club exhibit.

108th California Art Club Annual Gold Medal Exhibition includes two of my Paintings

Winter White 16 x 20

Above Batiquitos 9 x 12

The Gold Medal Exhibition takes place March 3 to March 29 at 490 E Union St Pasadena

This is my ninth consecutive time in the Gold Medal Exhibition!

The California Art Club’s signature exhibition of contemporary-traditional fine art spotlights more than 300 sculptures and paintings of genres ranging from landscapes and seascapes to figures and still lifes. The exhibiting artists include nationally renowned representational artists who have been active in expanding interest in the California Impressionist heritage associated with the organization’s founding in 1909. While the artists employ time-honored fine art techniques, their featured works in this un-themed exhibition seek to innovate with modern messages that address societal issues from diversity to the environment.
In presenting the 108th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition at the location of the former Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA), the California Art Club returns to the venue that previously presented eight installments of its signature event – including the historic 100th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition.

Monarch of Carmel Valley in California Art Club "Golden State Splendor" exhibit at the Santa Paula Art Museum July 15 to Nov 5

Monarch of Carmel Valley, 16 x 20  plein air
This was just painted this past May during the Carmel Art Festival.  I love this hill in upper Carmel Valley.  It is about 20 minutes beyond Carmel Valley Village and the drive to it is through some exquisite Oaklands, stands of Sycamores and horse ranches. I feel the tension leave my neck and back as I pull out here along Carmel Valley Rd. Often painting in absolute silence.

The title is cribbed from Hanson Puthuff who titled a painting "Monarch of Malibu".  If I can paint the hills of California half as well as he did I will be happy.
I chose the title for this piece because this hill feels so majestic.
It is truly my vision of splendor!

"Ojai View" and "Hollister Peak" in California Art Club's The Plein Air Perspective at Millard Sheets Art Center, Pomona

Ojai View 9 x 12

Hollister Peak August 14 x 14

Through January 28th

I entered this exhibit because Millard Sheets was a powerful force in all that is watercolor in California.
I did a little research on him and found out  he started exhibiting with the California Watercolor Society at 15! Usually I think that artists starting this young have artists for parents, but that's not the case. He was raised on a horse ranch by grandparents who gave him his first art lesson at 7 and he had two aunts who encouraged his artistic talents. I wonder if either one of them was an artist?Millard seems to have been one of the focused ones who chose a path early in life and stuck with it.

Update;

I thought you would like  to see the different frame I used on this one

It is Randy Higbee's Taos grey frame, I have seen it at the Sonoma Plein Air and thought I would give it a try.
