California Art Club 113th Gold Medal Exhibition

“Spring Radiance” 12 x 12

We are delighted to inform you that your superb work, referenced above, has been selected for the California Art Club’s 113th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition at the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University in Orange from Tuesday, August 20, 2024 – Sunday, October 26, 2024. Congratulations! Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University California Art Club, est. 1909 “

Artist Statement

This painting is about the vivid colors one can see on a sunny day in the Spring in Southern California. The early California landscape painters were mocked by East Coast critics for their use of bright colors. I take pleasure in pushing the brilliance of watercolors to the edge of gaudiness( and hopefully not all the way there) to express this glowing place.

Mesa of Many Colors

Mesa of Many Colors just finished this afternoon

15x 21 watercolor

This is the Mesa behind my house in North Coastal San Diego county.

The greens and their  complements of copper and rose inspired me to paint this. The colors glow under the May Grey sky.

Lunar Codex to launch with “Flyover Canyons of Mars”

It’s exciting that my painting “Flyover Canyons of Mars” has been curated in a lunar capsule as part of the Lunar Codex project. Congrats to all my fellow CAC artists who are part of this historic exhibition.

Codex Nova - scheduled to launch February 14th via the @spacex Falcon 9 and expected to land on the lunar south pole February 21 along with Galactic Legacy Labs and the @nasa CLPS TO2-IM Lander. The launch will be livestreamed via NASA Launch Watch.

The second capsule - Codex Polaris - with my art will launch in November 2024.

“Flyover Canyons of Mars” was inspired by thinking of how the dust in the Martian atmosphere would lend itself to beautiful hazy light effects that are the perfect subject matter for watercolor.

Surfing Madonna Save the Oceans 2024

Pleased to have “Neap Tide” in the Surfing Madonna exhibit at the Front Porch Gallery in Carlsbad.

Neap Tide was painted at San Onofre state park. The Ocean is very shallow there and the waves are small and have a linear quality to them that fit the 8 x 16 format well.

I love love the color they painted the wall at the gallery.

The Surfing Madonna organization is one I admire because of the commitment to the Ocean Environment, Providing support to artists and poets and holding Surf camps for surfers with special needs.

Opening reception Sunday Jan 21 12 to 2

3rd Annual LPAPA Signature Showcase

Here are my two painting on exhibit:

Top of the Ridge

Pleated Ridge

Top of the Ridge is a  tribute to the green landscapes of William Wendt. Pleated Ridge is a favorite because the palette of colors in afternoon light on the desert ridge is so distinctive. No green at all in this painting!

Top nine paintings for 2023

Thought I would share the top Nine from Instagram here.

Most are rectangular but this crops them all into squares

Some work better than others as squares
